Building Credit From Scratch: Where to Start

Having no credit history can be just as challenging as having bad credit. Lenders want to see how you handle borrowed money, and without a track record, you may struggle to qualify for loans, apartments, or favorable rates. The good news: building credit from zero is entirely achievable with the right tools.
Start with a secured card or credit-builder loan
A secured credit card requires a small deposit that becomes your credit limit, making it easy to get approved with no history. Credit-builder loans work similarly — your payments are reported to the bureaus while you build savings. Both are excellent first steps for establishing a positive payment record.
Become an authorized user
If a trusted family member has a long-standing account in good standing, being added as an authorized user can let their positive history reflect on your report. It’s one of the fastest ways to add age and depth to a thin credit file.
Keep balances low and let time work for you
Use your new accounts lightly, pay in full each month, and avoid opening too many lines at once. Credit history length matters, so the earlier you start, the stronger your foundation will be over time.
